    Sorry, We’re Closed
    Posted by: Michael

As you may have noticed, not much has been happening around here for the past few months - at least from me. Thanks to Henry Lewis for at least keeping the site current on occassion. Frankly, I’ve gotten tired of keeping up a blog and have moved on to do different things. I do post the occassional blather at Balloon-Juice but, other than that, blogging has not been interesting enough for me to continue doing so regularly.

So, since I’m not blogging, I’ve decided to shut down this site. I appreciate al the comments and readers over the life of Gay Orbit. But I know there’s plenty of other reading out there for you, so I know you’ll find something. In the mean time, please stop by Henry’s site. If you haven’t noticed, my views have gravitated much more toward the left lately - not because I am left-leaning at heart, but because they turned out to be right on so many things about this administration. In other words, if you read what Henry writes, chances are you’ll be getting opinions that are very simmilar to mine at the moment.

Anyway, thanks. Keep fighting the good fight. And have a wonderful November, 2008. I know I am looking forward to it.

    Why so Serious?

I was a big fan of the Batman Begins movie. I have high hopes for the next installment. Heath Ledger seems to be taking a “realistic” approach to the Joker, closer to the comics than the view taken in the Nicholson attempt.

I never liked Dr. Phil. It’s one thing for the media to be obsessed over Britney’s complete implosion, Dr. Phil is – allegedly – a counselor.

Explain to me how it is in Britney’s interest to have her meeting with him discussed publicly? Or, worse, to have her parents go on his show to talk about their daughter.

Britney is a disaster, no question.  And Dr. Phil is ready to cash in on that.

    We get it.

Iowa is over. Huckabee and Obama won.

Why is it all the pundits are acting like the race is over? It’s not. This is game 1 in a 52 game season. Sure, winning the first game is good for the winner, and bad for the loser(s). Still, it’s hardly time to suggest that the ‘losers’ are all in disarray or that the Iowa caucus was a devastating blow. It seems to me, historically, Iowa hasn’t had exactly the best track record for picking the ultimate candidate.

And, for the record, I still have no ‘favorite’ in the race. And, honestly, I hope Huckabee is the nominee for the GOP. Make the election next year much easier.

Running For President A Lot Like Hunting Turkeys
    Posted by: Michael

    Mike Huckabee:

“There’s a lot of similarities in that it is about the pursuit and you have to be patient and you have to persevere and you have to realize that sometimes you can hunt all day and it doesn’t look like you’re gonna come out with a thing and then the biggest buck in the whole woods comes out and you take it two minutes before the end of shooting time.”

He continued: “In our campaign, a lot of people didn’t think we were even in the game, and here we are at the end of the time leading up to caucuses and we proved that if you just stay out there in the woods, keep your gun ready, it might turn out okay.”

He then went on to do something no responsible hunter would ever do. He fired shots over the heads of the reporters:

In the first 30 minutes, Huckabee, Saltzman and a friend shot three birds. Their last shot flew over the heads of reporters, one of whom cried out: “Oh my God! Oh my God! Don’t shoot. This is traumatizing.”

Even Dick Cheney would probably forgo a hunting trip with Mike Huckabee. I feel slightly embarrassed for candidates who do things that so obviously pander to a population. Watching John Kerry in his hunting gear was painful, as was his trip to a country restaurant, while waiting for his catered lunch to arrive. Watching Democratic candidates show up at gay and lesbian events, when they rarely do at any other time, is patronizing to say the least. Etc., etc., etc. It’s all about what they can do about useless issues.

The biggest issues for me are:

    1. The national debt. Tell me how you’re going to reduce that. I haven’t heard a thing from anyone on either side about it that shows me they have a clue about what to do or how to do it.
    2. The war. Don’t just tell me you’re going to bring the troops home, or that George Bush is a bad CinC. tell me HOW you’re going to bring them home, and how you will do it in a way that leaves Iraq in a position to at least have a small chance at success.
    3. Immigration. Again, don’t tell me you have a solution. Don’t tell me you’re going to seal the borders and kick out all the illegals. Both are impossible. If you have a solution on immigration, tell me, point-by-point what your plan is. Even if I don’t agree with it, I’ll respect you if I know you thought beyong the sound bite.
    4. Healthcare. Most candidates have a plan. But beyond the sound bite or the talking point, they don’t explain it. If you tell me we’re going to a single payer system, tell me how you are going to accomplish that without bankrupting the system. If you can do it, I’ll be all for it. If you can’t, then I won’t. Again, I’ll respect your position if I know you can explain exactly how you plan to accomplish it.
    5. Education. We desperately need education reform in this country. No Child Left Behind is a farce. The only thing it accomplishes is forcing teachers to “teach to the test.” It produces students that are dumber than a bag of hammers. So far, the only person who has said anything I even remotely like is, *gasp*, Mike Huckabee. I think one of the most tragic changes in education is the virtual elimination of music and art programs.

So, take off the hunting garb. You look stupid. Don’t tell us Washington needs change. We know that. tell us how you would change it. Don’t tell us you’re the most experienced and then refuse to open up the record on your 8 years int he White House to actually show us what you did. And don’t tell me you’ll stand up to corporate interests unless you can tell me exactly what needs to be done to stand up to them, and how you’ll do it. What’s sad is that candidates who do speak to very specific points about their platform are the ones who don’t get elected. Those who just spout off the talking points and don’t get into specifics are elected in what amounts to a likeability contest.

Finally, when someone asks you who you have in mind for cabinet positions, tell us. Don’t bullshit us. We know you know and it would be very helpful to know not just about you, but about the people you’re going to surround yourselves with.

The electorate has become so dumbed down because we just accept the talking points, sound bites, and he said/she said of politics. We accept that candidates are going to waffle, flip-flop, refuse to answer, or tell us what we want to hear. And then we’re totally surprised when they get into office and we realize we elected a complete moron.

Apparently is attacking a woman several days after she is killed trying to bring moderation to Pakistan.

Now, I’m certainly in no position to judge the accuracy of the claim that Bhutto wasn’t the savior everyone thinks she was. Maybe she wasn’t. However, a courageous critic would have made a big deal of it before Bhutto was killed, not afterwards. (Maybe she did, and it wasn’t publicized, but I visited her blog and didn’t find anything overly critical of Bhutto).

I do think I know enough to wonder if blaming her for being too moderate makes any sense. Even if you accept she was a moderate, she was killed for not being conservative enough. Imagine if he views were even more divergent from the current Pakistani mainstream.

A school in Virginia has a dress code policy with prohibits “bawdy, salacious or sexually suggestive messages.” So, of course, it was applied to a woman with two interlocking female signs.

However, the school recognized their mistake and issued an apology.

Well, after the (EVIL) ACLU got involved, and threatened to sue, the school saw the error of their ways.

A soldier in the army, with a gambling problem, lost large amounts of money. He went awol, left the army, but continued to struggle with the problem. Sadly, he killed himself.

So, of course, the answer is to ban gambling on military bases. Because, when we send people off to war, we expect their down-time to focus on prayer and needle point.

    Can you help Michael?

**Update** Not that you need a holiday to do good for people, but I think this is a good time of year to get tested to see if you would be a suitable donor for someone who needs you. Michael is one case but, as you are aware, there are tens of thousands of Michaels. One of the coolest things I have ever done is to put myself on a bone marrow registry. I have a fairly rare blood type, and I figured it would be a great idea. No calls yet, but I’ll go wherever I need to go if that call comes. That would be the coolest gift I could ever give someone.

    Priceless!

Pope Benedict XVI has launched a surprise attack on climate change prophets of doom, warning them that any solutions to global warming must be based on firm evidence and not on dubious ideology.

He then went on to talk about God, creation, loaves & fishes, walking on water, raising the dead, etc.

    I ♥ FRC
    Posted by: Henry

I was catching up on my FRC, and was informed that the need to recognize the dissolution of gay marriage/civil unions is non-existent. Why?

[Because of] the lack of enthusiasm among homosexuals for these benefit-bearing unions in the first place. Since the 2000 census (the first to allow Americans to identify themselves as a same-sex partner), only 24% of gay couples in Connecticut have bothered to enter civil unions.

First of all, I’m not sure how they were able to get a handle on how many gay couples there are in Connecticut, for them to determine the % that have ‘bothered’. The census? Well, that’s hardly accurate. It doesn’t ask about gay couples, it does some odd ‘same-sex’ question, which could apply equally to sister living together.

And, what is and appropriate amount? I wonder what percentage of ‘straight’ couples are married. Apparently, it must be close to 100% for the need of marriage to be so important.

More Interference From the “Scienticians” in the Bush Admin.
    Posted by: Michael

The Fish & Wildlife Service has had to reverse a ruling, after figuring out that the administration interfered. Not surprising to those of us who actually follow stuff like this, unfortunately.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Tuesday reversed seven rulings that denied endangered species increased protection, after an investigation found the actions were tainted by political pressure from a former senior Interior Department official.

In a letter to Rep. Nick Rahall, D-West Virginia., the agency acknowledged that the actions had been “inappropriately influenced” and that “revising the seven identified decisions is supported by scientific evidence and the proper legal standards.” The reversal affects the protection for species including the white-tailed prairie dog, the Preble’s meadow jumping mouse and the Canada lynx.

The rulings came under scrutiny last spring after an Interior Department inspector general concluded that agency scientists were being pressured to alter their findings on endangered species by Julie MacDonald, then a deputy assistant secretary overseeing the Fish and Wildlife Service.

MacDonald resigned her position last May.

Rahall in a statement said that MacDonald, who was a civil engineer, “should never have been allowed near the endangered species program.” He called MacDonald’s involvement in species protection cases over her three-year tenure as an example of “this administration’s penchant for torpedoing science.”

Read the whole thing. Looks like this is just the tip of the iceberg. (Which gets me to thinking: when all the icebergs have melted, what will we use for a metaphor?)

    Presidential Match-o-Matic

Just for fun, I tried this quiz from ABC News. Pretty accurate - for me at least. What presidential candidate do you most closely match up with. My top three:

    #3. Hillary Clinton
    #2. Mike Gravel

    #1. Bill Richardson

That doesn’t surprise me at all.

A new poll suggests Mitt Romney is the candidate most people would like to beat the hell out of in a bar fight. Most voters would like to kick the shit out of John Edwards, too, just not in a bar.

Related: Just heard on Wolf Blitzer’s, The Situation Room: “The most important thing for candidates in Iowa is for voters to show up.” If I didn’t watch CNN, I would know nothing.
